Happy Birthday Sea Bunkering!
This year Sea Bunkering Ltd celebrates its first two fantastic decades of trading.
The Sea Bunkering story began in 1991, when founder David Gregory left his then employer to start up a new business venture in Hull.
As a fledgling business, the new Sea Bunkering team focused its sales efforts exclusively on the UK distillate market, and quickly built up a base of loyal customers. David had been nurturing close relationships with key suppliers since the 1980’s; these associations continue today and remain fundamental to Sea Bunkering’s competitive edge.
In 1994, Barry Newton joined David at Sea Bunkering as a Trader, leaving the marine department of Conoco Phillips. The team continued to grow the Sea Bunkering business together until 1998, when Barry went to London to join fuel broker Lindsay Blee.
Barry stayed away until 2005, when David decided to move on and sold him the business. At this point, Barry set up the Geos Group, a holding company incorporating a number of trading divisions: Sea Bunkering, Lindsay Blee and Maren (specialising in providing fuel to luxury super yachts).
The biggest change that has come about since Barry took over at Sea Bunkering – apart from the addition of an office in Henley as well as Hull – has been the introduction of physical stock holding and delivery, which gives customers greater flexibility, speed and quality of service. Sea Tankers was created in 2006 to operate two vessels, and a fleet of trucks was added in 2007.
The Geos Group now has 11 members of staff and an extensive network of supply partners. Looking ahead – if we can see past the party and the birthday cake – the future looks rosy for Sea Bunkering and the Geos Group as a whole, for many more decades to come.
