Offshore Renewable Report
A new study, published in May 2010, has attempted to describe the potential value of the UK’s offshore renewable energy resource.
The Offshore Valuation Group, made up of an informal collaboration of industry organisations and government representatives, claims that rapid growth in the offshore renewable energy sector and the creation of a North Sea super-grid could enable the UK to become a significant exporter of renewable energy into Northern Europe.
The report sets out three possible future scenarios, the most ambitious seeing an average of 13.1GW of wind, wave or tidal energy being added every year until 2050. One highly optimistic scenario envisages 145,000 new jobs and energy generation equivalent to 1 billion barrels of oil per year by 2050 – from natural resources that won’t run out.
Whether or not any of the scenarios set out become a reality remains to be seen. However it is already clear that the number of offshore wind farms is set to increase – perhaps rapidly – and we are already seeing approved construction projects getting underway at sites like Thanet (off the Kent coast), Greater Gabbard (Suffolk coast) and Sheringham Shoal (Norfolk coast).
From a fuelling perspective, we at SBL understand that customers in this fast-growing sector need flexibility, reliability and a competitive pricing structure. We can deliver up to 300MT of marine gas oil via barge or truck to any North Sea port, and we can offer you a superb two-week window on your delivery time from placement of order.
