In December we were delighted to announce that we now hold our own physical stock of marine gas oil in the Thames. Our product is FAME-free, 1000 ppm marine gas oil, with a minimum flash point of 60 degrees. The fuel we supply is fully MARPOL compliant, and supplied duty-free to vessels at competitive daily prices.

Happy Birthday Sea Bunkering!

Happy Birthday Sea Bunkering!

This year Sea Bunkering Ltd celebrates its first two fantastic decades of trading.

The Sea Bunkering story began in 1991, when founder David Gregory left his then employer to start up a new business venture in Hull. He took with him two experienced members of staff, June Heron and Ed Denyer – along with all their valuable industry knowledge – both of whom are still with the company twenty years later.

Aberdeen Experience

Aberdeen Experience

In September, Barry Newton and Graeme Cardno from Sea Bunkering attended the ‘SPE Offshore Europe Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition’ in Aberdeen. The event has been running every two years since 1975 – Graeme went to the very first one and has been attending ever since! “It was pioneering stuff back then”, says Graeme, “and the exhibition has grown in step with the offshore market”.

The Importance of Flashpoint

One of the issues affecting the UK shipping industry at the moment is the supply shortage of marine gas oil. But is there a viable alternative? Inland gas oil is more readily available than marine gas oil, and often cheaper, but it is generally NOT permitted for use at sea. The reason for this is that marine gas oil and most inland gas oils have differing minimum flashpoints (60°C and 55°C respectively), i.e. the lowest temperature at which fuel can vaporize to form an ignitable mixture in air.

Ruth Runs a Marathon

The Sea Bunkering Accounts Department has produced its first marathon runner: Ruth Kenyon. The second Brighton Marathon took place on Sunday 10th April 2011 on a swelteringly hot sunny day. Having completed the race in an impressive time of 4 hours 17 minutes, Ruth said: “it was definitely my toughest race yet!” Brighton is a colourful and bohemian seaside town so the atmosphere was fun and lively, even if the heat made it harder than expected for the 8,000 endurance runners to get round the 26.2 mile course.

OPEC - Who cares?

OPEC is a cartel of competing oil producing nations that stabilises oil prices and regulates supply; When OPEC makes a major announcement, Sea Bunkering’s day-to-day business is directly affected.

But why is this? In our last newsletter, we explained how it is the actions of global market speculators that cause the day-to-day fluctuations in the price of oil, and affect our fuel prices to you. OPEC is one factor that influences the decisions of the speculators.

Read on to discover how OPEC announcements affect your business…

Re-sellers for Conoco

One of our biggest strengths at Sea Bunkering Ltd is the close supply partnership we have with Conoco Phillips UK. A leading international energy company, Conoco Phillips supplies large volumes of gasoil to the marine market through its re-seller network - offering pricing in different currencies and customer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Meet the team

We thought you might like to know a little more about the people on the end of the phone in our Hull office and what ‘makes them tick’.

So here is a brief biog of two of our stars, Ed and Janie

Ed Denyer
Ed started out in the industry working for Conoco selling Bunkers in the UK to a varied list of clients within Conoco’s Marine Sales Department. After several years with Conoco, Ed moved to Harris and Dixon gaining worldwide experience as a Broker and Trader in their London office.

For the past 18 years Ed has worked at Sea Bunkering, developing it’s client base and reputation to the respected and highly thought of company it is today. His experience and knowledge of the industry is invaluable and is used daily to help customers with their commercial needs.

Ed’s spare-time interests include Music, Sports, and relaxing with friends, as well as bringing up a family

Janie Cox
Janie has excellent trader credentials having started the first 5 years of her career with Cargill Plc in Hull, a physical supplier and import/exporter of grain and molasses worldwide. After this, Janie transferred to the Cargill European HQ in Cobham, Surrey where she spent the next 3 years working in the business development and global sales department for Cargill Investor Services, a futures and options derivative broker.

Seeking a new challenge, Janie left CIS in 2004 to go to AdAstra Diversified Fund and was one of a group of 7 key people employed to launch a new systematic hedge fund, trading a wide range of products over more than 50 asset classes.

Janie still keeps a watchful eye on the speculative world of hedge funds and is interested in the financial markets generally particularly understanding the macro economic impact world events have on the stock markets.

Sea Bunkering Trucker
Keep on trucking

Did you know that, for the past two years, Sea Bunkering has offered a physical supply fuel service for our customers? Since 2007 we have operated our own tankers, one 29,000ltr and one 35,000ltr, in the South East region of the UK loading and delivering from anywhere between Ipswich and Poole. Both trucks are aligned to the Marpol regulations and their drivers are highly skilled personnel and, having worked in the marine industry for a number of years, know it very well.

Graeme Cardno from the Hull office commented ‘Our customers have the benefit of a full service from Sea Bunkering and with it the reliability and dependability we offer on all our fuel services’

Offshore Renewable Report

A new study, published in May 2010, has attempted to describe the potential value of the UK’s offshore renewable energy resource.

The Offshore Valuation Group claims that rapid growth in the offshore renewable energy sector, and the creation of a North Sea super-grid, could enable the UK to become a significant exporter of renewable energy into Northern Europe.

The report sets out three possible future scenarios, the most ambitious seeing an average of 13.1GW of wind, wave or tidal energy being added every year until 2050

Oil Prices Ups and Downs

The price of marine fuel fluctuates from day to day, and this can be confusing and bewildering for some of our customers!

Large oil refineries buy raw crude oil, which they process and make into petroleum products such as marine gasoil. When the price of crude oil changes, the price we pay to the oil companies changes too, and so does our price to you.

However, real shifts in the physical supply and demand of crude oil occur slowly and over long periods of time ... so why do our prices change so rapidly on a daily basis?

Ships Emissions

With last years agreement by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to adopt voluntary proposals aimed at cutting carbon emissions, it is likely that more pressure will be applied by environmental groups to reduce emissions in shipping. Currently, Maritime emissions are estimated at 3.3 per cent of total emissions worldwide but emissions of ships visiting EU ports was equivalent to 6.1 per cent of the trading areas overall emissions, which was higher than predicted, means it is extremely likely that the EU will move to regulate the sector.
